Out of the Closet

I do not usually post political tirades on my blog. I like to keep it generally about art, and a sort of document about what I am working on in my studio. AND it is difficult to out myself about this subject when it is completely unpopular amongst every single one of my peers; I have yet to find one artist that isn’t crazy gah-gah over Obama. And for the record, I am not against him. But I am a long time supporter of Clinton. If you want to throw tomatoes at me, that’s fine.

If you think I’m against what Obama stands for, that would be incorrect. I am all for “Change.” I just think a REAL change would be Hillary Clinton as our first woman president. Don’t you think men have run this country long enough? And I’m not only for Clinton because she is a woman. I am for her because she has a long history for fighting for our civil rights, has tried to change the healthcare system when she had a little bit of power during the Clinton administration, and has not given up despite people telling her to quit. She’s specific and cares about people. She has to deal with all the media making her look bad because they are obviously pro-Obama. I love NPR, but they are HARD on Hillary. Every media outlet has been hard on her. People have been harder on her than they have been for any man — and have expected far more from her than they would from a man. When have you ever heard the media disappointed in a male candidate for not showing his “softer side?” Boy was I pissed when Hillary had to cry a little after that whole thing. She shouldn’t have! She’s tough, and so what? It’s such a double standard, and she’s putting up with a lot. She’s the underdog, not Obama. And we just may have a nominee based on 48 states instead of all 50. People seem to be forgetting about that too. How fair is that to Michigan and Florida, not to mention all of us? Shouldn’t everybody’s vote count? Is this the hijack of 2000 all over again?

Anyway, I just wanted to come out of the closet about all this. This morning I was on hillaryspeaksforme.com watching all the videos, and I was moved to type this up.  So let the attacks on me begin.

Well, you’re right about her. It says a lot about her toughness that she’s even still in the race. These days people drop out in the first three days if the polls and pundits tell them they should. It is encouraging to see someone like Clinton saying, “Fuck you, you aren’t going to tell me when I should quit. It isn’t over until the nomination is made.” Because that’s true. Obama can win the rest of the primaries by 25% of the vote, and the nomination could still conceivably go to Clinton. So I’m glad she isn’t conceding to Obama.

The whole generic CHANGE thing is a weak con anyway. Empty, meaningless bullshit. The odds of really seeing any CHANGE, are exceptionally slim, considering you have to be kind of spineless and moldable to be a politician in the first place. Maybe we’ll get out of Iraq in less than 100 years (stone-cold madman McCain has already said it’s fine with him if we’re there into the next century), but so what? That damage has been done, and there isn’t anything we or anyone else can do to fix it.

If Obama was smart he would have let Clinton take the nomination. He’s young, he could have his 8 years after hers. Then we’d get two for the price of one. She has enough experience not too fuck things up too badly, leaving the door wide open for Obama in 2016. I don’t know if you can say the same about him. I can see a lot of ways his presidency could be a disaster. And unfortunately, as it is now, if Clinton loses, it may be a long time before you see another woman in just the right position to make a run like this.

I’m not going to step too far into this, but there’ are a fair number of us on the left who have despised Hillary for a long, long time, largely because the Clinton’s fucked up so badly on what should have been their legacy, universal health care, and she was at the helm of that effort.

For a lot of us, she isn’t our second choice out of the initial Democratic pool, she’s always been a poor candidate. I would much have preferred Edwards, Richardson or even Biden over Hillary in this election. And I’d certainly prefer Al Gore over any of the candidates running.
